This brings back so much nostalgia. Growing up poor, I could never afford these things and watching these walkthrough videos and WWDC events over and over again was a constant hit of dopamine and appreciation of their presentation. TL;DW: The “iPhone” Jobs did the demo with and wouldn’t ship until almost half a year later wasn’t fully functional yet (big surprise!). He used multiple demo units that were each programmed to run apps in a certain order and swapped between them. This has been well-known for a long time.

Apple is slow to roll out maps to new locations, but when they do, they’re so, so good. Puts Google maps to shame, and let’s not even talk about how ugly Waze is, in comparison. And Apple’s street view is far and away better than Google’s too. The parallax effect is unmatched.

A few comments in the HN thread say it’s to offload load from the carriers service, but the original OP has neighbors broadcasting a hotspot (xfinity router/modems do this automatically when you rent a modem from them) so now its competing with their home wifi with no way to shut it off.
