Story updated with the following statement from an Apple spokesperson: “We have paused ads related to gambling and a few other categories on App Store product pages.”

Ads coming to Maps? Apple really is going to become a shitty advertising company. Combine this with the endless hardware & software issues over the past couple years, and it doesn’t look good for the future. “Hey Siri, give me directions to the grocery store.” “One sec. I can do that, but have you thought… Continue reading Story updated with the following statement from an Apple spokesperson: “We have paused ads related to gambling and a few other categories on App Store product pages.”

PSA: macOS Ventura Removes the Ability to Schedule Shutdown and Boot

Kind of a hacky option and would need to be tested, but you could schedule a shutdown (this could be done several ways) and kill the power to it once it’s shut down (using some kind of smart plug). Enable start up automatically after power failure (in the energy saver settings), and trigger the power… Continue reading PSA: macOS Ventura Removes the Ability to Schedule Shutdown and Boot

Apple’s lack of care with gambling app ads is a symptom of a bigger problem

This is a legitimate issue to complain about. Not only are these gambling apps scummy, but the ads for them appear in the “you might also like” section, despite the fact they may have absolutely nothing in common with the app the user is previewing on the App Store. That’s just bad user experience.

Greg Joswiak: Apple Will Have to Comply With the EU and Switch iPhone to USB-C

I really think there is no chance they go portless and I don’t know why this rumour persists. Wireless is a mostly bad way to charge phones with a couple of good applications (MagSafe phone mounts in cars, and desk/bedside docks). They’re less energy efficient, they’re bad for the battery, they’re slower, they are less… Continue reading Greg Joswiak: Apple Will Have to Comply With the EU and Switch iPhone to USB-C

Apple Rejected Spotify’s App Update Adding Audiobook Support

Apple apparently told Spotify that it can send customers emails about online purchases, but Spotify is not able to offer a button inside of the app to request emails. The feature was designed with Spotify’s legal team involved, and Apple initially approved the update in September, but later reversed course, rejecting subsequent updates. Spotify designed… Continue reading Apple Rejected Spotify’s App Update Adding Audiobook Support

I realise this is a known, and much lamented issue, but holy moly: Why is this user experience so bad? It’s basic things, like when I find a new podcast it will drop me on the latest series. Has there been any example of a prototype/early version of a iOS app being leaked out or something?

iOS uses the TestFlight system to restrict app distribution to development and beta build users. Continuous delivery pipelines automatically distribute the compiled builds into TestFlight. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TestFlight You can’t run an unsigned executable unless it is side loaded, or the iOS device is jailbroken. iOS is ultimately built to prevent this.

Walmart Still Doesn’t Accept Apple Pay in U.S. Despite Many Customer Requests

It’s because Walmart has a major, vested interest in people using Walmart Pay, their own little payment application, which their payment terminals support using in a contact-less method. Sites that don’t respond to “Do Not Track” in Safari

Hi folks, I’ve been curious about this for a while: Despite Safari’s privacy features (DNT), couldn’t a website or service just ignore the request? Apple’s Industrial Design Chief Hankey to Leave Three Years After Ive

Even for all his faults, Jony is irreplaceable. He pushed the boundaries even if it fucked him. Unionized workers at Apple in Towson are preparing for bargaining amid reports of unequal treatment

I mean unless your union agreement has a “me too” clause (they’re a thing in union bargaining, usually it’s government unions that trigger if a separate union/bargaining unit gets a better raise or something), then you are only entitled to exactly what’s in your union negotiated contract. That’s how union contracts work. And while a… Continue reading Unionized workers at Apple in Towson are preparing for bargaining amid reports of unequal treatment

One trick Apple uses to make you think green bubbles are “gross”

Largely, I only hear from Android friends who complain about the green bubbles (which they don’t even see on their device).
