Using adult animated TV for therapeutic/cathartic purposes

Hey all!

I’m a writer for a local women’s magazine, and I’m working on a piece that discusses the use of adult animated TV shows to help process difficult life experiences and complex emotional situations, especially against professional therapies often being booked out or too costly. How do women use shows like these to help understand ourselves and our personal/mental/emotional journeys inside and as part of the world that happens around us?

I’m thinking shows along the lines of: Bojack Horseman, Big Mouth and Human Resources, The Midnight Gospel, Undone, etc.

I am considering using some “non-adult” animations that have had more complex emotional impacts, like Wall-E, Encanto, and some Studio Ghibli works.

Do you use any animated shows as a form of self-therapy and/or self-reflection? What shows? Why? How have they helped you learn and understand more about yourself and the world around you?

I’d love some discussion here, but if you feel more comfortable with DM, that’s ok with me too.

Thanks in advance, and I appreciate your time 😊
