how do you know if you are depressed ?

I am officially diagnosed, but I knew before that I very likely had depression based on the symptoms I was experiencing. My symptoms were:

  • loss of motivation for pretty much everything

  • neglecting personal hygiene (showering/brushing teeth)

  • feeling a lot of sadness and emptiness – crying a lot as a result

  • difficulties getting out of bed or doing anything

  • lots of negative repetitive thoughts

  • low self worth

  • loss of enjoyment for things I used to enjoy

  • quickly getting overwhelmed in social situations

  • isolating myself

  • thinking about not wanting to exist or wanting to be dead (note: I was never actively suicidal)
