Apple Translate is mostly done on-system, and is still in its infancy. Think of it like typing prediction but between languages.
A step up is Google Translate which calls home to get the “best” solution.
Neither will provide you with a natural language equivalent though; they’re mostly effective for helping people with no knowledge understand each other across languages; it’s not going to be pretty, just functional in the large view.
