Is Siri bad because Apple doesn’t collect user data to the same extent as other tech companies?

I wouldn’t compare Siri to ChatGPT (or other similar projects). I mean, we can see where those things are going and how voice assistants will be very significantly impacted, but they’re still a ways off from practical implementation into every day constant use voice assistants.

While those projects are very public facing, Apple is notoriously secretive, even in this field where publishing has such a huge focus among researchers. So just as Siri was released one day, Apple could just spring something on us.

We do know that some of us are noticing a huge uptick in traffic from Apple crawlers on our websites, which could be part of a new search initiative, part of expanding Siri search, or feeding data into their competitive AI project.

It’s also worth noting that LLMs require huge amounts of data, but that data doesn’t have to be identified with an individual, nor does it need to be monetized through advertising.

Look at ChatGPT. It returns results and asks for a thumbs up or down along with ways that the response could be improved. If you thumbs down and submit a factual correction, it could use that data to learn. A service like that doesn’t need to permanently associate you with the response and deliver ads accordingly… unless that’s the business model.

I think a lot of investors will be looking at WWDC to see if Apple is going to announce something, but really I wouldn’t be concerned if they don’t this year.
