Everyone agrees that Siri is terrible, but lets talk about the disappointment that is Apple’s Dictation and voice-recognition technology

If for some reason I need to feel disappointed about something, I use Dictation. It has never failed to amaze me how Dictation find the most creative ways to misspell words, even in quiet environments and even when I clearly try to articulate extra carefully (I already have low standards for Dictation). Btw, I’m a native English speaker.

There are tiny start ups like OtterAI with dictation and transcription technology that can insert punctuation (commas, periods, exclamation points, and question marks) just by your vocal inflection and free apps like Microsoft Transcribe that does the same. Even in loud environments their accuracy is surprising and sometimes shocking. Both run laps around Apple.

For a company with as much resources as Apple, why is voice recognition and dictation tech so bad and neglected? The company claims to be all about accessibility but its literally more work fixing Dictation’s misspellings then typing it up myself.

Siri is a joke, Dictation and voice-rec technology is bad, even the swipe keyboard on iOS rarely gives me the prediction I want. It should be getting better at predicting my swiping style after years, but it’s just as dumb as day one. Why is Apple falling behind on so many important things?
