Why did churches stop holding ground for cemeteries?

A lot of churches stopped buying extra land for a graveyard because cemeteries exist. It is easier to build a new building in a town, or take over a building, if you don’t have to have extra space to bury dead people. Just put them in the town’s massive cemetery.

Also, if it’s connected to a church, it’s a graveyard. If it is free standing on its own, it’s a cemetery.
