I read this book called Jesus and John Wayne, and the author interviewed a lot of Korean and Vietnam War vets and a surprisingly large plurality of them said they joined the military because of John Wayne movies. His pro-military propaganda movies created this idea of a rugged masculine individualism in America that reaped a lot of violent, toxic results.
