I worked for a doctor as a clinical research coordinator. The doc forgot to sign a document that needed to be signed prior to starting a surgical procedure. I ran to the surgical suite hoping to catch him before he scrubbed in but it was too late. The procedure hadn’t started yet but he was already scrubbed in. I spoke to him over the intercom to tell him I was sorry to make him scrub down to sign the document but I really needed that signature. His eyes lit up and he said there’s a sterile pen in the OR for occasions just like this and he had never used the sterile pen before. I scrubbed up and stood just outside the sterile field with the clipboard and document and he signed it with the sterile pen. He was beaming the whole time. For the rest of the day I heard him telling coworkers how he got to use the sterile pen. It was such a small thing but I had never seen him so happy.
