The one that stands out in my brain was when I was thirteen. I have a disorder that presents very similarly to autism, so I communicate a lot by memorizing the socially appropriate thing to say and repeating it.
I arrived at a funeral. The priest asked how I was doing.
I put on a big smile and said “Great! How are you?” The look on that poor man’s face.
It was that day that I changed my default from “great” to “fine.” Which I think is more normal anyway.
