What was the big mistake of the director of the Titanic film?

I just think cinema was the wrong medium to tell the story.

In a movie there needs to be a main character, in this case jack and Rose, but I think having main characters and sub plots in a story that’s supposed to be about a major tragedy kinda takes away a bit of the limelight from the real people who were really there and really died.
