What was significant about the Founding Fathers of America?

Forgive me if I’m wrong, but it seems that they were the first to pay so much attention to a form of democracy that featured extensive checks and balances.

I mean, the ancient Greeks also had democracy, but it was very different.

I think that the amendment system was a valiant attempt to create a document that would change with the times, too.
