When I was at university I took a telemarketing job for a company that made branded shit, like pens, keychains, stress balls, that kind of crap. We were calling small independent businesses like mechanics, tow companies, plumbers, HVAC companies, that kind of thing.
Cool, all good, but on each call part of the schtick was to tell the business owner that if they ordered x amount, they would be entered in a draw to win a prize, with prizes that ranged from a cheap bracelet on up to a big-screen TV and a cruise vacation. About halfway through my first day, I asked how many people had ever won any of the big prizes and the dude training me told me in a low voice that nobody won the big prizes, cuz they didn’t exist – everybody that bought anything just got sent one of the shitty bracelets and told that’s what they won.
Stood up and walked out on the spot – I don’t mid trying to sell someone a product, but I’m sure as fuck not going to lie to them about a bullshit contest.
