What is a fun low maintenance pet?

I love animals, grew up with all different kinds. I’ve thought of getting a pet over the years, but I always hold myself back for several reasons – don’t like getting hair everywhere, don’t like getting woken up at all hours for playing, food or needing to go outside, don’t like cleaning up messes all the time.

So this pretty much eliminates dogs and cats, definitely no birds. Fish tanks are a pain from what I remember, plus you can’t play with them. What about something like a gecko? Are they semi fun and low maintenance? Any other suggestions?
