Nairobi, 24 October 2024 — UN-Habitat and ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability continue their collaboration this year by hosting the Multilevel Action and Urbanization Pavilion at COP29, scheduled to take place from 11 to 22 November 2024. The Pavilion will spotlight the growing recognition of cities, towns, and regions as key actors in the global climate agenda.
The Pavilion will serve as a dedicated platform at COP29, focusing on both the achievements and challenges of local and subnational actors in addressing climate change. It is co-convened by UN-Habitat and ICLEI, as the focal point of the Local Governments and Municipal Authorities (LGMA) Constituency.
Bridging local and global climate efforts
In line with COP29’s objectives, the Multilevel Action and Urbanization Pavilion will elevate subnational and urban perspectives in global climate discussions. Serving as a platform for cities, towns, and regions, the Pavilion will showcase key announcements, launch new partnerships, and spotlight innovative climate solutions. By fostering dialogue and collaboration, it will provide urban stakeholders with a space to voice their needs and present strategies for accelerating urban resilience, reinforcing their critical role in driving effective climate action.
“The Multilevel Action and Urbanization Pavilion at COP29 represents a crucial platform for experts, cities and local governments to showcase their leadership in climate action. By fostering dialogue among diverse stakeholders, this Pavilion will elevate local voices and solutions that are essential for achieving global climate goals,” said Anacláudia Rossbach, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director, UN-Habitat. “It will not only highlight the challenges we face but also celebrate the innovative approaches being adopted by cities worldwide, reaffirming our collective commitment to sustainable urban futures.”
The global stage for local climate action
As global leaders gather in Baku for COP29, the Multilevel Action and Urbanization Pavilion will provide a space for dialogue on how cities and regions are driving climate solutions. The Pavilion will highlight key topics such as urban resilience, green infrastructure, and the urgent need to integrate subnational actions into national climate plans.
The Pavilion will also be co-hosted by Azerbaijan’s State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture (SCUPA) and supported by other international partners. It will host a range of in-person and hybrid events designed to facilitate discussions between local, national, and international stakeholders. With a dedicated networking space, the Pavilion will offer opportunities for informal conversations and collaborative engagements that strengthen climate commitments at every level.
