World Health Organization (WHO) is currently seeking applications from the eligible applicants for the post of Technical Officer, Vector-borne Diseases Prevention and Control in Washington, D.C., United States. The duration of this post is 11 months.

The primary role of WHO is to direct and coordinate international health within the United Nations system.

Key Job Responsibilities

The Technical Officer, Vector-borne Diseases Prevention and Control will perform the following functions:

• Provide technical support for the prevention and control of vector-borne diseases and neglected infectious diseases in the Region;
• Support the promotion and facilitate the consistent use of PAHO/WHO recommendations on entomology in public health and vector control, on malaria control, and the elimination of neglected diseases emanating through the PAHO Technical Advisory Group on Public Health Entomology (TAG-PHE), the WHO Vector Control Advisory Group (VCAG), the WHO Malaria Policy Advisory Committee (MPAC), as well as the vector control group of the WHO Prequalification Team for Vector Control Products (PQT-VC);
• Support PAHO’s Regional Malaria and Entomology and Vector Control Programs in their mission to promote and implement Integrated Vector Management, the Plan of Action on Entomology and Vector Control 2018-2023, the Plan of Action for the Elimination of Neglected Diseases and Post-Elimination Measures 2016 – 2022, the Global Technical Strategy for Malaria 2016 – 2030, the Framework for Malaria Elimination and the Plan of Action for the elimination of Malaria in the Americas 2021-2025;
• Provide technical advice and support in coordination with partners and counterparts, for the implementation of regional initiatives with the objective of the improvement and strengthening the capacities of the countries in decision-making for the prioritization of risk areas and implementation of vector control interventions based on the analysis of epidemiological and entomological information and the status of insecticide resistance;
• Promote and support the operation of the Americas Network for the Surveillance and Management of Insecticide Resistance and the Regional Entomology and Vector Control Information System, to support the countries in the management of resistance to insecticides used in public health;
• Provide technical support and advice to the Ministries of Health, scientific communities, and other partners for the evaluation and implementation of new approaches and technologies and the strengthening of their information systems on entomological surveillance and their strategies for the control of vectors of interest in public health;
• Provide technical support to the national malaria control and prevention programs of the Member Countries, to improve the coverage and implementation of LLIN and IRS as main strategies for Anopheles control;

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have:

• Bachelor’s degree in a health science related to the functions of the post, from a recognized university.
• Master’s degree in public health entomology, vector management, vector-borne and/or neglected epidemiology would be an asset.
• 7 years of combined national and international experience working in public health entomology, vector control and prevention, epidemiology of vector – borne diseases, disease prevention, control and elimination programs.
• Experience in integrated management, insecticide resistance monitoring and management and vector control in the Americas, would be an asset.
• Very good knowledge of English or Spanish with a working knowledge of the other language.
• Knowledge of French and/or Portuguese would be an asset.
