Organization
The African Union, established as a unique Pan African continental body, is charged with spearheading Africa’s rapid integration and sustainable development by promoting unity, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation among the peoples of Africa and African States as well as developing a new partnership worldwide. Its Headquarters is located in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia.
Organizational Setting and Reporting
The position is located in Conflict Management Directorate , Peace Support Operations Division (PSOD), in the Commission of the African Union (AUC), Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The position falls within the overall functions of the Conflict Management Directorate.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Director, Conflict Management Directorate, the Senior Political Officer shall perform the following main duties:
Drafting and reviewing external and internal reports, publications, talking points, speeches and briefing packages, for quality of content and style
Developing and/or maintaining informational products on a wide range of thematic topics of the department;
Developing and/or maintaining information gathering / processing mechanisms;
Supporting co-ordination, and information sharing between relevant staff through out the department, and with the Heads of divisions, to ensure strategic and operational cohesion between political and programmatic activities;
Providing advice to the Director Conflict Management on reporting and co-ordination needs and challenges, including specialized communication components to enhance reporting products and services;
Acting as focal point within the Political and Reporting unit for selected field offices and assigned thematic topics / issues;
Support interactions between AU Commission and the Members State;
Advise the CMD on conflict management and resolution related issues in Members State, in particular the identification of strategic entry-points for African Union’s intervention;
Collect and analyse information from different sources;
Follow up on the peace processes;
Contribute to the revision of the AU Strategy;
Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political;
Perform any other tasks as may be assigned by the direct supervisor.

Academic and Language Requirements
Minimum University Master’s Degree in political science, international relations, international law or similar fields. A first level university degree with a relevant combination of academic qualifications and experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Proficiency in one of the AU working languages (English, French, Arabic, Spanish and Portuguese) is a must. Knowledge of a second or all of the other working languages would be an added advantage.
Professional Experience
A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in political affairs, diplomacy, conflict resolution, or related field is required.
Have Seven (7) years’ work experience with at least three (3) years’ experience in a related field with Government, NGO, and think tank, or similar multi-lateral, regional or international institution.
An Extensive experience in political outreach, facilitation, analysis, advice and reporting is required.
