Job Purpose:

The position holder is to support the Principal Investigator (PI) of a project in the implementation of the study with a particular focus on recruiting and assessing GPC participants for common mental illnesses including major depressive disorder (MDD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as well as training and mentoring of the research

assistants.

Roles & Responsibilities

Principal duties

• Obtain ethical clearances for the different studies run by the group and making renewal

submissions;

• Supervise and manage a group of social science research assistants;

• Ensure studies within the group are run following best practices;

• Conduct staff training and supervision on psychiatric phenotype and social science data

collection and analysis, as may be required;

• Conduct data analysis of qualitative data from interviews, discussions, observations and from rapid qualitative assessments;

• Work with statisticians and data managers to support the uploading and analysis of quantitative data, answering queries on cleaning and emerging results;

• Ensure filing of collected data and project documents;

• Assist in developing study training manuals;

• Coordinate defined intervention activities for the study (if appropriate);

• Follow up of participants and conducting quality control of qualitative data; and,

• Draft manuscripts and presentations from study data.

Financial Management

• Handle payments to participants during study activities and provide accountability to the MRC administration for the same; and,

Handle cash expenses / DFA holder for a maximum of 500,000 UGX.

Line Management Responsibilities

• Train and mentor other study staff (fieldworkers and social science research assistants)

Person Specification

• Bachelor’s degree in a social science subject;

• Masters level qualification in Clinical Psychology;

• GDPR and HSP/GCP training;

• Should possess experience in working research setting;

• Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team with clinical/epidemiological

researchers;

• Experience in developing training materials;

• Experience in delivering training;

• Experience in data analysis using SPSS or R or Stata;

• Experience in petty cash handling;

• Should have knowledge of good clinical practice and ethics in research;

• Knowledge of psychiatric disorders;

• Should possess self-drive;

• Excellent social and communication skills;

• Excellent organizational skills; and,

• Able to work independently as well as part of a team.
