MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda Research Unit Laboratory Technologist Jobs in Uganda
Job Purpose
The position holder will perform laboratory tests and report results of the laboratory procedures performed according to the Standard Operating Procedures – Sops. Participate in, Interpretation & implement study analytical plans for new studies, promote GCLP compliance, sample management, involvement in training, promote health and safety, document management and report writing and be responsible for laboratory equipment and maintenance.
Roles & Responsibilities
Principal duties
• Writing and reviewing of standard operating procedures (SOP) in accordance to the manufacturer guide;
• Receiving, processing and analysing samples timely in accordance with the SOPs and quality control/assurance requirements;
• Prepares reagents, chemicals and culture media where applicable for laboratory use;
• Performing of the Internal Quality Control and External Quality assurance as per schedule;
• Cleaning and disinfecting equipment and document on equipment cleaning log;
• Tracking equipment servicing requirements and notify the section leader;
• Monitoring temperatures and record on temperature log;
• Assisting in capacity building through demonstrating practical procedures to new staff and student attachments; and,
• Ensuring proper waste segregation management and autoclaving before incineration for disposal.
Financial Management
• Maintains reagent stock records to avoid stock-outs/ overstocking, both of which can lead to financial loss;
• Monitors equipment functioning, and service & reports malfunctioning equipment; and,
• No financial signatory responsibility.
Line Management Responsibilities
The post holder may be tasked with line management of Assistant Laboratory Technologists and interns for which the following has to be ensured; –
• Staff are enabled to perform their assigned duties as expected;
• Staff professional development is nurtured in line with the Unit’s and LSHTM’s capacitybuilding goals;
• There is a positive and supportive work environment;
• Staff feel included and valued and their professional feedback and proposals are heard and considered;
• Staff expectations are clearly communicated;
• Staff performance is regularly monitored;
• Potential conflicts are resolved promptly and decisively, involving HR support where needed;
• Formal appraisals are conducted within the departments in line with the Unit’s schedule;
• Applicable LSHTM and Unit HR policies are being followed at all levels; and,
• Participate in the development of equal opportunities, diversity and inclusion.
LSHTM Integration
• Participate in & follow MRC/UVRI/LSHTM procedures & policies;
• Undertake any other duties
within the grade that may arise due to LSHTM integration;
• Engage in harmonization of workflow procedures between within the Unit & London; and,
• Utilise on new opportunities that result from the transfer to improve my career, quality of work and operational efficiency.
Environment
• Advocate for the responsible and efficient use of resources; and,
• Participate in approaches for reduction of adverse environmental impact due to lab operations.
Person Specification
• An honours Degree in Biomedical Laboratory Technology (or equivalent)
• GCLP training/ current Allied Health Professions license
• MSc in a laboratory related subject
• Should possess experience in biomedical laboratory and working to GCLP standards;
• Previous experience in working in a laboratory Clinical Trials environment;
• Extensive practical experience across the major medical laboratory disciplines;
• Experience of GCLP & IATA;
• Experience interacting with different departments;
• Analysing a wide range of samples;
• Managing and supporting different teams;
• Linkage with external regulatory agencies;
• Working in a research environment;
• Demonstrable experience in administration and resource management;
• Experience working in qPCR analyses;
• Should possess knowledge of of GCP/GCLP or other regulatory environments in the workplace;
• Knowledge of safety regulations;
• Ability to show initiative, problem solve and make independent decisions;
• Provision of high-quality training and supervision to staff and students;
• Lead quality assurance programs;
• Technical expertise and leadership;
• Independent assay development & troubleshooting of new procedures;
• Excellent organisational skills;
• Good communication skills in English;
• Ability to take the initiative and solve problems;
• Excellent interpersonal and team working skills with the ability to work with staff at all levels; and,
• Capability to work well with colleagues from other departments.
