General Function

Internews is seeking a project director to be based in Addis Ababa for a 2-year project focus on conflict-sensitive reporting, peace building and social cohesion. The project will roll-out peace awareness and education campaigns at national, regional and local levels supported by community and campus radios stations, online productions and youth- and women- led peacebuilding CSOs. The project will focus in the following four northern regions, Tigray, Amhara, Afar and Benishangul-Gumuz.

The Project Director will be responsible for overseeing the overall program implementation and will provide strategic guidance and leadership for the program; coordinate the activities of the different member of the consortium; ensure proper oversight of Internews personnel, financial management and administration; and coordinate with other stakeholders in the region to ensure that Internews leverages other resources, avoids duplication and complements other media development initiatives.

The Project Director will also be responsible for establishing strong partnerships and dialogue with the appropriate donor representatives and stakeholders in Ethiopia. The project Director will lead Internews to work with media partners to facilitate two-way communications between citizens and decision-makers at the local and national levels.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide general oversight of the program, including program and consortium management, strategic vision, budget management, fiscal integrity, quality and timing of deliverables, and coordination with partners.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for the Internews projects in Ethiopia – for both the donor and Internews Headquarters.
  • Manage Internews staff and consultants that provide technical assistance to local media and CSO partners and beneficiaries.
  • Communicate challenges facing the project and articulate the project’s successes in meeting those challenges.
  • Reviews all financial reports and expense documentation.
  • Responsible for the quality, cost, and timeliness of performance of all work performed under the funding contract.
  • Responsible for the Monitoring and Evaluation of the Project.
  • Prepare quarterly programmatic reports.
  • Strategize new directions for Internews to help independent media.
  • Fundraise for project continuation; Serve as the point person for business development within Ethiopia.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of local media in country.
  • Develop and maintain contact with local stakeholders.
  • Participate in some training activities (oversee some content production aspects, co-facilitate some training activities, etc).
  • Participate in the design and lead technical activities, including media assessments, training and mentoring, information campaign.
  • Oversee the creation and development of communications materials to be shared and disseminated by with Internews HQ.

    Qualifications

  • 7 years of professional experience working as a project manager in the field of Media development, governance or peacebuilding; OR Relevant professional experience as a journalist, editor and media manager in Ethiopia.
  • Substantial experienced working as a Project Manager managing complex project with a large consortium; a proactive Country Lead/Program Manager with a strong reputation for developing excellent collaborative working relationships with counterparts, local and international organizations and donors.
  • An experience working with media on peace and social cohesion issues.
  • Overall knowledge of Ethiopia is essential.
  • A successful track record in supervising, designing, managing, and implementing technical assistance for donor-funded media projects and proven ability to develop and monitor work plans, training plans, and procurement plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a national staff and an international team of consultants.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, necessary to maintain good relations with relevant stakeholders.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Knowledge of European union or other European donor compliance rules.
  • Fluency in both English and Amharic required.
