British High Commission in Lilongwe Driver Jobs in Malawi

Main Purpose of Job:

To provide transport services for staff and other authorised passengers at the British High Commission (BHC) to and from assigned destinations within Malawi in a safe, efficient and courteous manner, strictly adhering to road traffic rules, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Transport Policy and Post’s security regulations.

General Responsibilities

Vehicle Operation, safety and compliance

  • The primary duty is to operate a vehicle, safely and skilfully. This includes starting and stopping the vehicle smoothly, handling the steering and brakes effectively, and navigating through different types of roads and traffic conditions
  • Drivers should be familiar with the routes they are taking and make use of navigation tools (GPS) or map to ensure they reach their destinations efficiently. This includes considering traffic conditions, road closures, and alternative routes
  • Drivers are responsible for following all traffic laws and safety regulations. This means obeying speed limits, using turn signals, stopping at red lights and stop signs, and ensuring the safety of passengers and other road users
  • Drivers should be prepared to handle emergencies on the road, such as accidents or breakdowns. This may involve knowing how to administer basic first aid, using emergency equipment like fire extinguisher or reflective triangles, and contacting appropriate authorities if needed

    Vehicle maintanance

  • Drivers need to maintain the vehicle in good working condition. This involves regular checks of tire pressure, fuel levels, cleanliness, oil, and other fluid levels as well as spare tyre and jack. If any issues are identified, drivers should report them promptly to their Transport Supervisor.
  • Ensure vehicles are serviced at the stated mileage and all details documented in the Logbook.

    Customer Service & Professionalism

  • Providing excellent customer service is important. This includes greeting passengers, helping them with their belongings, answering questions, and ensuring a comfortable and pleasant ride.
  • Drive authorised passengers to meetings and functions in and around Lilongwe and also up-country.
  • Maintain a high degree of confidentially and discreteness in discussions and travels involving the nature of the role, passengers and destinations, etc.
  • Drivers should present themselves in a professional manner, wearing appropriate attire and maintaining a courteous and respectful attitude
  • Effective communication skills are important, whether it’s interacting with passengers and other road users.

    Record Keeping

  • Drivers need to maintain accurate records of their trips, including details such as mileage, destinations, time of departure and arrival, and any incidents or unusual occurrences during the journey. Have a well-documented journey plan when proceeding on long trip. Use the issued satellite telephones as required.
  • Driver should maintain accurate records of fuel usage on trips including safe keeping of fuel card receipts which should be reconciled on their return.

    Adaptability

  • Any other duties as assigned by the Transport Supervisor, including, but not restricted to covering for colleagues during official absences, and manning the BHC reception when required.

    Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • C1 Valid Drivers Licence
  • Valid Defensive driving certificate
  • Computer skills (particularly Word and Excel)

    Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Mechanical technical awareness and skills would be helpful
