U.S. Embassy in South Africa Political / Economic Specialist Jobs
Duties
Must understand and explain the political and economic climate in KwaZulu Natal and broader South Africa (SA) as the sole Locally Employed Staff in the Political-Economic Section (Pol/Econ).
Must be able to independently cultivate a broad range of contacts to gather information for analytical reporting, promote, and further USG priorities in SA.
Manages the Consulate’s outreach to critical Pol/Econ contacts.
Writes cables and analytical reports for interagency audience.
Provides briefs on a wide range of Pol/Econ issues to Pol/Econ Officer, Consul General, senior Mission SA, and Washington visitors.
Qualifications and Evaluations
Experience:
Minimum of five (5) years of work experience in social science research, a South African political party, in local government, civil society, journalism, or academics related to politics/economics, or related to the political/economic arena is required. Prior private sector experience that would yield knowledge of policy making and the economic climate of KwaZulu Natal is required.
Job Knowledge:
In-depth knowledge of host country and province’s political and economic realities, political/economic institutions, government structures, political parties, organizations, and historical development.
Must also have the ability to develop an in-depth knowledge of the U.S. Government and State Department goals and objectives as well as an in-depth knowledge of the South African government at both executive and department levels.
Education Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree or host country equivalent in political science, economics, business administration, sociology, or history is required.

Level 4 (Fluent) speaking/reading/writing may include the ability to translate.
Skills and Abilities:
Ability to analyze continually changing South African government political and economic developments as well as leadership and policy making of the ruling party (ANC).
Develop contacts within the decision-making circles.
Obtain relevant information from sound contact work which will feed into important reporting that will keep Mission South Africa and Washington updated on all critical issues related to KZN’s political/economic landscape.
Familiarity with MS Word & Excel is required.
