Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) are rapidly urbanizing in the midst of a changing climate. Over 80 per cent of the region’s population now resides in cities, with estimates projecting this number to reach 90 per cent by 2050. This urban shift coincides with rising temperatures, cyclical extreme weather events, and worsening water scarcity due to climate change.
The LAC Climate Week 2023 will take place in Panama City from 23 to 27 October. This event will provide a platform to discuss and develop solutions to the urgent challenge of urban resilience.
Conversations will revolve around promoting positive change, starting from cities. They will cover themes such as the importance of inclusivity and giving voice to communities at risk, urban regeneration, gender-sensitive planning, multilevel governance, and using nature-based solutions to drive climate action.
These conversations will feed into the global discussions taking place at COP28 including at the Ministerial Meeting on Urbanization and Climate Change being held on 6 December in the Blue Zone.
UN-Habitat will facilitate the following sessions during LAC Climate Week:
- Winning on climate action in Latin America: Unlocking finance for city-scale transformation through multi-level governance (Location: Marriott Panama Hotel), 26 October, 9.00 a.m. – 10.00 a.m.
- Sustainable cities, thriving communities: transforming Latin American cities through climate action (Location: Room Darien), 26 October, 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m
- Urban voices: Nature-based solutions for inclusive and climate-resilient cities (Location: Marriott Panama Hotel, Room Ancón II), 26 October, 5.00 p.m. – 6.00 p.m.
