Position Overview
The Health and Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for all staff, patients, and visitors within the Hospital. They will develop and implement policies, procedures, and training programs to promote compliance with health and safety regulations and standards.
The officer will conduct regular inspections, risk assessments, and investigations to identify hazards and mitigate risks. Additionally, they will collaborate with various departments to address safety concerns and promote a culture of safety throughout the hospital.
Responsibilities and Duties
Develop and implement health and safety policies, procedures, and programs per regulations and international standards.
Conduct regular inspections and audits of facilities, equipment, and work processes to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
Assess risks and develop strategies to mitigate and control hazards, including the provision of recommendations for corrective actions.
Investigate accidents, incidents, and near misses, and prepare reports with recommendations for preventive measures.
Coordinate safety training programs for staff, including orientation for new employees and ongoing education for existing staff.
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of health and safety programs and initiatives, making adjustments as necessary to improve outcomes.
Collaborate with department heads and supervisors to address specific safety concerns and develop solutions to improve safety performance.
Maintain accurate records and documentation related to health and safety activities, including incident reports, training records, and safety data sheets.
Stay informed about changes in health and safety regulations and best practices, and ensure the hospital remains compliant with relevant requirements.
Serve as a resource and provide guidance to staff on health and safety matters, promoting a culture of safety awareness and accountability.
Qualifications and Competences
Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, Environmental Health, or a related field.
Certification in Occupational Health and Safety (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) is highly desirable.
Proven experience working as a health and safety officer or in a similar role, preferably in a healthcare setting.
In-depth knowledge of health and safety regulations, standards, and best practices.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify hazards and develop effective risk mitigation strategies.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with individuals at all levels of the organization.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
Attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite.
Commitment to promoting a culture of safety and fostering continuous improvement in health and safety practices within the hospital.
