The position

The Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu is an institution of the Aga Khan Health Service, Kenya, which is an Agency of the Aga Khan Development Network. The Hospital is part of a network of health facilities, which includes Hospitals and Outreach Health Facilities across East Africa. The Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu is in an exciting growth phase and has attained acknowledgment of its quality by achieving ISO 9001:2015 certification, ISO 15189:2012 accreditation for laboratory services, Safe Care level 5 accreditation and is at advanced stage of attaining Joint Commission International Accreditation. The Aga Khan Hospital, Kisumu has Outreach Health Services at Kisii, Kakamega, Kitale, Bungoma, Kericho, Kibuye-Kisumu, West End- Kisumu, Busia, Homa – Bay, Migori, Bomet, Eldoret, Kimilili and Nyamira.

The Aga Khan Hospital Kisumu together with Aga Khan University Hospital Nairobi plan to conduct a project on thromboelastometric tests for alterations of coagulation in patients with Plasmodium falciparum Malaria. The project data collection will take place for 30 days in June 2024 in Kisumu. The project is seeking to recruit short term services of suitably qualified Research Assistant (RA) to help with data collection in Kisumu.

Overall Responsibility

The Research Assistant will provide support to the research team in conducting this study.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with identifying and screening potential participants based on inclusion/exclusion criteria and obtain informed consent from eligible patients or their representatives.
  • Collect demographic and clinical data from medical records, ensure accurate and complete data entry into designated study electronic databases.
  • Track patient progress throughout their hospital stay while documenting relevant clinical information.
  • Assist with scheduling and coordinating blood draws for thromboelastometry and other required blood tests.
  • Proper labelling and storage of blood samples according to study protocol and assist with sample processing tasks as required.
  • Maintain accurate and organized study records, enter data into designated study databases in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Maintaining research files and study documents and help prepare study reports and presentations (as needed).

    The requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g. Public Health, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Sciences)
  • At least 1 year experience in research experience in clinical research setting
  • Strong understanding of research ethics and informed consent procedures.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficient in computer skills (data entry, spreadsheet software).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
