African Population and Health Research Center Policy Officer Jobs in Kenya
The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading Africa-based, African- led, international research and policy institution headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. Our researchers conduct policy-relevant research on population, health, education, urbanization, and related development issues in sub-Saharan Africa.
APHRC seeks to recruit a Policy Officer to work in the Strengthening Policy and Mainstreaming Gender in Sanitation Project within the Policy Engagement and Communications (PEC) Program. This is a new role arising from the implementation of the current five-year strategic plan which has, subsequently triggered tremendous growth in our programs.
Reporting to the Project Lead, the Policy Officer will work closely with the Advocacy Officer to coordinate work on policy, legal guidelines, and partner-related initiatives, as well as to support monitoring and evaluation of the project. Externally, s/he will work closely with consultants and partners to coordinate policy, legal, and related aspects of the project.
Duties and Responsibilities
Develop and implement a policy strategy for the project.
Liaise with relevant colleagues and partners to review legal and policy instruments as may be necessary.
Develop policy briefs and legal positions from time to time.
Work with internal and external partners to draft legal and policy documents and guidelines/tools.
Undertake monitoring and evaluation initiatives for the assigned projects throughout the project lifecycle.
Coordinate the legal and policy initiatives with consultants and external partners.
Work closely with the advocacy officer on matters of public participation and partner inclusion.
Support the production of relevant documentation for use in advocacy and policy initiatives.
Qualifications, skills, and experience
Bachelor’s degree in Law or Public Policy.
Master’s degree in related disciplines will be an added advantage.
At least 3-5 years of post-qualification work experience working on legal and policy analysis initiatives is a key requirement.
Excellent communication (written and spoken) skills.
Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
Experience in legal and policy analysis of development initiatives in the WASH sector will be desirable.
Experience in producing high-quality written work to influence policy outcomes.
Experience working with diverse stakeholders, including communities, NGOs, CSOs, government ministries, and government bodies.
Flexible and adaptable approach in order to respond to shifting priorities and a rapidly evolving external environment.
The ability and desire to acquire and maintain knowledge of the legal and policy arena.
