Organisation Background:
Founded in 2011, the International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO) is an international non-governmental organisation that supports humanitarian aid workers by establishing safety coordination platforms in insecure contexts. INSO provides registered NGOs with a range of free services, including real-time incident tracking, analytical reports, safety-related data and mapping, crisis management support, staff orientations and training.
INSO provides daily support to more than 1000 NGOs operating in 16 of the world’s most insecure countries.
INSO is registered in the Netherlands with its headquarters based in The Hague, the international city of peace and justice.
Sudan Analysis and support team – hosted by INSO Kenya.
INSO Kenya was founded as a standard NGO safety platform in 2012. In 2018, it transformed into the monitoring mission now integrated into INSO’s Horn of Africa program.
INSO is currently upscaling its services in Sudan. The Sudan analysis and support team based in Nairobi will assist NGOs working in the volatile Sudan context with reports, analysis and advice. The support team includes all the reporting and analysis department, as well as the support team (finance, logistics, Human resources), and will coordinate closely with NGOs and safety managers in the field.
Working for INSO support team to Sudan will allow you to experience this complex environment while you support humanitarian efforts to address the challenges Sudan faces.
We are now hiring a Deputy Safety Advisor. This position is based in Nairobi, Kenya.
As the Deputy Safety Advisor, you will work with the Safety Advisor (SA) and the Deputy Director to fulfill INSO’s core mission of helping NGOs in the assigned region understand the context and mitigate risks. You will be involved in information collection and data input, analysis and reporting, crisis management support, and networking with various stakeholders.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Provide NGOs with timely and credible security information and contextual analysis of the local security situation through daily alerts and reports, weekly incident lists, bi-weekly analytical reports, and other thematic reports.
Assist the Deputy Director in preparing and issuing regular reports, area assessments, and other INSO products requested by the aid community.
Assist the Deputy Director with the delivery of reporting services.
Collect and verify incidents and events in the region related to the safety of NGO workers in the area.
Manage and update incident databases to ensure the organization’s records are accurate and complete. Support and verify incident entries to CHDC made by the Safety Advisor Assistant.
Work with the Deputy Director and safety advisor to analyze the operating environment and identify trends. Use data and databases to create charts, data visualizations, and maps.
Work in proximity with NGO partners in the field.
Attend regular humanitarian coordination meetings in Nairobi or online to build relations with partners and remain up to date on humanitarian activities in the area.
Translate relevant communications from local language(s) into the working language of the country office (English/Arabic) and vice-versa.
Position Requirements
Essential:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent certification in one of the following: Journalism, Communications, Conflict Studies, Political Sciences, History, International Affairs, Security Studies, Criminology, or any other relevant fields.
Working proficiency in English and one or more local languages with excellent writing skills in both.
Willingness to frequently travel around the region.
A good understanding of NGO safety best practices and a willingness to learn.
A proven ability to develop and maintain working relationships with partners.
Excellent computer skills and knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office
Previous experience with or demonstrated capacity to learn how to work with data analytics tools.
Nice to Have:
Working knowledge of Arabic
2 years of experience in Sudan
2 years or more prior experience with NGO security and/or project management.
Experience in project/team management.
Proficiency in other languages relevant in the context.
Experience in drafting situation reports and short briefings, experience in crisis management and support to NGOs.
Capacity to work with minimum supervision and maintain high level of engagement.
