The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP’s mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

UNEP’s Africa Office supports environmental governance institutions and processes and engages a broad range of partners that include governmental, non-governmental, academic, and private sector entities on multilateral environmental agreements and sustainability programs and projects in response to national, sub regional and regional needs and priorities. UNEP’s support to regions and countries is guided by reforms of the UN Development System including the UN Resident Coordinator and UN Country Team systems.

The West Africa Sub Regional Office based in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, was established with the objective to strengthen UNEP’s strategic regional presence, increase its relevance, and enhance advocacy for the environment in the sub-region.

Its core functions include political engagement, collection and analysis of data/information to inform decision-making processes by the organization, programmatic collaboration with UN agencies and other actors, engagement with the UN Resident Coordinator system, UN Country Teams and other UN coordination and collaborative mechanisms and platforms at sub regional and national levels, building strategic partnerships to support implementation of its mandate; resource mobilization, and advocating for the environment through targeted communication and outreach.

The office also serves the function of liaison with the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Internship position is available at UNEP Abidjan duty station.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the

department or office to which they are assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision by the Programme Assistant, the intern will perform the following duties and responsibilities.

  • Assist in providing support to monitoring UNEP’s inputs to UN INFO and other reporting platforms.
  • Assist in liaising with UNRC Offices to support in monitoring the political situation in the Sub-Region and its potential impact on the implementation of UNEP’s projects and programmes.
  • Assist in research and compiling relevant data and preparing briefing notes for the Head of Office for meetings.
  • Assist projects managers to facilitate the implementation of programmes and projects at country level.
  • Assist in drafting background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, Common Country Analysis, Country Frameworks, and workshops.
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

    Qualifications/special skills

    Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Preferred relevant field of study business administration, international relations, environmental sciences, or related field is required.

    Languages

  • Working knowledge of English and French is required
