UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable and resilient towns and cities. It is the focal point agency for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat envisions well-planned, well-governed and efficient cities and towns, with adequate housing, infrastructure and universal access to employment and basic services such as water, energy, and sanitation.

The internship is located within the Planning, Finance & Economy section, Urban Practices Branch, UN-HABITAT, Nairobi, Kenya.

The Planning, Finance & Economy Section (PFES) is responsible to support urban and territorial planning at all scales including through the development of planning policy, norms and guidelines, urban design and public space design, urban finance (municipal finance and urban development/projects finance), and local economic development.

The Communication & Graphic Design internship is for 6 months.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Planning, Finance and Economy Section, the intern will contribute in the following ways:

  • Support and contribute to the communication activities, events and materials.
  • Identify, collate and prepare informative and promotional materials for diverse media, researching different sources of information as required.
  • Assist with writing of news articles, newsletters, reports, articles, and concept notes.
  • Support in the graphic design, photo and video editing of outreach, promotion and information material, such as publications, presentations, catalogues, brochures, videos, flyers, infographics and handbooks.
  • Review and monitor communication channels and metrics associated with the projects and initiatives.
  • Research best practices for communication and identify the media that fits the projects objectives and purpose.
  • Participate in team meetings, prepare minutes and help to coordinate follow-up activities.
  • Create surveys and assist in their analysis and translation of results into various communication media/applications.
  • Assist and plan activities and events regarding all the projects and areas UN-Habitat works.
  • Other functions as required.

    Task Opportunities:

  • Familiarizing oneself with urban planning, urban environmental issues and urban development.
  • Conduct research and implement projects in state-of-the-art areas of urban and territorial planning such as climate change, social inclusion, urban resilience, urban health, displacement and migration, and of Localised Finance Frameworks & Local Economic Development.
  • Participating in dialogues with UN-Habitat’s corporate communication and media unit, regional and country offices, and with partners, such as regional or local institutes, private sector and NGOs.

    Qualifications/special skills

    Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Preferred areas of studies:

  • Advanced degree in Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Studies, Journalism, Communications, Graphic Design or any other related studies.
  • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
  • Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application.     Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
