UN-HABITAT Information Management – Intern Jobs in Kenya

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable human settlements development and the achievement of adequate shelter for all. For close to forty years, UN Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world, focusing on building a brighter future for villages, towns, and cities of all sizes.

In total, UN-Habitat works in over 90 countries to advance the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the local level, in accordance with the commitments and principles set out in the New Urban Agenda. The position is located within the External Relations, Strategy, Knowledge, and Innovations (ERSKI) Division, Knowledge and Innovation Branch, UN-Habitat, Nairobi, Kenya.

The Office for ERSKI is organized into three branches, the Strategic Planning and Monitoring Branch, Knowledge and Innovation Branch and the External Relations and Partnerships

Branch. ERSKI is responsible for strategic planning, programmatic direction and operationalization of UN-Habitat’s focal point role for the New Urban Agenda, and 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the UN system and for coordination of Emergency Programmes.

The External Relations and Partnerships Branch is charged with promoting strategic alliances to support achievement of the goals of adequate shelter for all, and sustainable urbanization and human settlements development.

The Knowledge and Innovation Branch is responsible to lead the development of policies and procedures on results-based management and coordinates the preparation of the strategic plan, programme and budget plans and monitors and reports on global agendas and policy implementation; it leads and facilitates an enabling environment for use and deployment of innovation and data.

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the supervision of Head Knowledge Management Support UN-Habitat, ERSKI Division, Knowledge and Innovations Branch, the intern will be responsible for supporting the Agency Archives and Records management Programme in the following ways;

  • Participate in the processing of archives according to established principles.
  • Participate in identifying, digitizing, and uploading relevant documents on past UN-Habitat project documents to knowledge resource page on in-house electronic system.
  • Assist in identification, listing, transfer, and preservation of non-current records.
  • Participate in the appraisal, disposal and developing finding aids to ensure efficient access.
  • Participate in adding content in the intranet. Provide management support of the audiovisual archives through processing the audio-visual collection of UN-Habitat according to format i.e., photographs, videos, films, and sound recordings.
  • Participate in the implementation of OneDrive, Teams, SharePoint Online.
  • Assist in adding content to UN-habitat DAM (Canto).

    Qualifications/special skills

    Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
  • Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office, PowerPoint and Excel).
  • Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Preferred areas of studies:

  • Bachelor of Science in Information Sciences, Knowledge Management and IT, Library and Information Sciences or any other related field.
  • No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
  • Experience in electronic documents and records management applications in managing paper and born-digital records is required.
  • Experience in survey and appraisal of official records is desirable.
  • Training in archives and records management is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.
