Chemonics Workforce Development Specialist Jobs in South Africa

Chemonics seeks a Workforce Development Specialist for the Power Africa Empower Southern Africa (ESA) Program funded by USAID. ESA is a 5-year regional program that covers South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini, Botswana, Namibia, Angola, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Madagascar, Comoros and Sao Tome and Principe. The primary purpose of ESA is to increase the availability of, access to, and use of affordable, reliable, sustainable and clean energy in Southern Africa in order to reach measurable development outcomes.

Measurable development outcomes include economic growth, reducing poverty, improving livelihoods, and increasing inclusive access to electricity-enabled services in such areas as health, education, sanitation, and food security. This position will be based in Pretoria, South Africa. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people and communities around the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Implement activities to expand regional networks and resources for vocational and technical training institutions, as well as organizations supporting the expanded roles of women in the energy sector
  • Use the Clean Energy Lending Toolkit to train local bank and microfinance institutions not yet familiar with the energy access, RE, and PUE sectors
  • Conduct training on selected topics in energy transactions and PPP law for lawyers in collaboration with local law firms and academic institutions
  • Organize UNLEASH innovation events to support startups and youth clean energy and energy access initiatives in at least two countries
  • Reinforce technical training capacity at the Eskom Academy for Learning to reestablish it as the preeminent training center
  • With the African Network of Centres of Excellence in Electricity, provide technical assistance to rebuild Eskom Academy’s teaching staff
  • Design a pilot internship or apprenticeship program for students of the Eskom academy to be implemented with competitively awarded grants to participating companies
  • Stay abreast of initiatives and developments in the clean energy workforce development space and participate in webinars and events as appropriate and as directed by the Energy Sector Investment Lead
  • Supervise short-term consultants
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Energy Sector Investment Lead

    Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, law, engineering, economics, sustainability, policy, or a related field, Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum five years of experience in implementing workforce development and capacity building programs in the energy sector
  • Familiarity promoting gender equality and social inclusion in the energy sector
  • Prior experience with managing a team of subject matter experts across multiple countries
  • Excellent interpersonal, diplomacy, and leadership skills, including the ability to manage high-level relationships
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility and integrity
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with command of French or Portuguese a plus
