Is it just a reddit thing to call your girlfriend/boyfriend/Wife/Husband your partner, or is it actually used in common practice, now? Why or why not?

I almost always refer to my partner as my partner. The word boyfriend in my language often implies that the relationship is either very new or very casual, or that the people involved are very young (teenagers), and while that’s not definitive by any means, it’s still not something I want to be associated with my relationship. I also just like the sound of the word partner.
