Infantry Veterans of reddit, would you encourage someone who wants to enlist (UK) as an Infantryman with the hopes of climbing the ranks (first sergeant/Captain/Airborne/Paras) to enlist in this day and age and explain why ?

I was an Aussie grunt. I deployed overseas but did not ever see any combat so I obviously cannot give you any insights there. I had a few issues from it but I would not ever change it. It gave me experiences that I would never had had otherwise and experiences that most people will never get to have. If it’s what you truely want to do, the only way to know is go do it.

I wouldn’t change it because if I hadn’t done it…I couldn’t fathom being in the position I am today. Regardless of if you join up and hate or are a life long career soldier, you will get something out of it.
