How do you fall in love with someone with knowing their personality?

I am asking this because some of my friends have ‘fallen in love’ with some celebrities, or with a person they have never spoken to and have not learned about, and I don’t understand it. I have never had a crush who wasn’t my friend and/or was very close to me.
