Times change, and it used to be really really pale skin because that meant you were part of the elite and didn’t have to work under the Sun. And funny enough pale or even whiter than your average peasants has been considered sign of aristocracy even among people who are not white. For example even ancient Egyptians used lead paint to look more white, to look more beautiful, probably not the best call, but people do crazy stuff over beauty.
