Main Purpose of Job:

To provide transport services for Defence Section, British Defence Staff and related visitors to the Defence Section. On occasion they may be required to provide driving services to support the British High Commission (BHC), and more widely, on a case by case basis. Journeys will be to and from assigned destinations within Kenya.

Driving should be conducted in a safe, efficient and courteous manner, strictly adhering to road traffic rules, Ministry of Defence Transport Policy, Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) Transport Policy, BHC Transport Policy and Post’s security regulations, (where there is disparity the more stringent regulations will apply).

This is an exciting opportunity to work in one of Nairobi’s biggest missions, providing an all-round logistics in support of the Defence Section. The successful applicant must have a clean driving licence, a minimum of five years driving experience and C1 or equivalent (armoured qualified). The applicants also require good working knowledge of the city, its environs and other areas of the country.

The individual will need to be extremely efficient in managing their time in an environment which is dynamic and liable to change at very short notice. The individual should be able to think ahead and choose the best route for the journey, demonstrate initiative, be extremely discreet and polite in all dealings with both internal and external contacts as a representative of the Defence Section.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Work as part of a two person Drivers team for the Defence Section & British Defence Staff.
  • Ensure cleanliness and presentability of Defence Section vehicle(s) at all times.
  • Carry out routine maintenance checks on Defence Section vehicles in accordance with the prescribed schedule. Ensure vehicles are roadworthy before starting on their journey ensuring checks on tyres, petrol, oil and lubricants as well as spare tyre, jack and mandatory safety equipment, etc are carried out.
  • Report vehicle defects and accidents in a timely manner usng the prescribed paperwork/systems.
  • Drive the Defence Section’s Armoured and ‘Soft Skin’ vehicles.
  • Meet and drive authorised passengers to and from airports, meetings and functions.
  • Accurately complete official paperwork for all journeys in the Defence Section vehicles, including Expressway Credit Management.
  • Work on an agreed shift programme, including periods of being ‘on call’ and sometimes weekends. There will be the occasional requirement for ‘multi-day’ trips. Maximum driving hours will be in accordance with MoD policy.
  • Ensure passenger safety and security ensuring passengers wear seat belts and, if in an armoured vehicle, they receive a passenger brief.
  • Have a well-documented journey plan when proceeding on long journeys. Be familiar with the issued tracking devices, radios and satellite telephones as required.
  • As directed, maintain contact with the Defence Section/BHC by using the provided radio/communication system and ensure that fitted dashboard cameras are properly used.
  • Maintain confidentially and discretion with respect to all passengers, journeys and destinations.
  • Other duties as agreed with the Defence Section, including, but not restricted to covering for colleagues during official absences.

    Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Able to communicate effectively in English, in person, on the phone and in writing
  • Valid Police Clearance Certificate from CID Kenya
  • Possess a clean valid driving licence, with necessary endorsement for driving a Civilian Armoured Vehicle (CAV)
  • Experience in driving CAVs
  • Good knowledge of Nairobi city roads, locations of government offices and main roads to other parts of the country
  • Minimum of a secondary school education KCSE certificate
  • 5 years’ experience as a Driver within a government or NGO or Corporate/Office environment

    Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Good driver customer service protocols and proactive organisational skills
  • Experience working with fleet management systems (FMS) as an end user
  • Good computer skills will be an added advantage
  • First aid certificate
