Background
Currently the Kenyan education system is shifting from a content-based to a competency-based curriculum (CBC). However, teachers and schools lack a deeper understanding of CBC and the knowledge and skills to effectively deliver a competency approach through child-centred playful pedagogies.
With learning outcomes across Kenya, and specifically in Mombasa and Lamu counties, below age standards – less than a third of Grade 3 children can read a Grade 2 level text – it is critical to enable teachers and schools to apply playful pedagogies in the classroom to improve learning of primary-age students.
Drawing on over 100 years of learning experiences in education across 15 countries in Asia and Africa, the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) shares LEGO Foundation’s belief in the transformational power of play to advance learning for all. AKF in partnership with the LEGO Foundation will transform primary education in Kenya through our programme: ‘Tucheza Kujifunza (TuKu)’ or We Play To Learn.
TuKu offers a responsive systems approach to increase the ability of the education ecosystem to be more adaptive to:
Enable 120,000 primary school-aged learners to access playful learning environments that are more social, iterative, engaging, joyful and fun.
Equip 3,000 primary school teachers with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours to incorporate playful pedagogies in their classrooms and schools.
Mainstream playful pedagogies into in-service primary school teacher professional development systems.
Encourage 6,000 community and family stakeholders to adopt and adapt playful pedagogies from the classroom into their learning environments at home.
Create a cadre of 200 Master Facilitators to ensure continued adoption and implementation of playful pedagogies in classrooms.
Purpose
Aga Khan Foundation communications rely on narrative and visual content to illustrate our work. This content is collected by external professionals as well as AKF staff and is used to communicate with a range of internal and external audiences. People are at the centre of these narratives.
We anchor our communications in the individuals and communities who take part in or benefit from our programming – their challenges, their triumphs, and what drives them to work towards a better life for their families and communities.
Scope of work
AKF is seeking a partner consultant or organisation to support the documentation of TUKU’s programme achievements. The Scope of Work involves:
Teachers depicting different Learning dimensions – 10 videos
Learning through play– 5 videos
VBE stories of change – 5 videos
Learning through play lesson demonstration – 1 video
Deliverables/Workplan
Activity Timeline- February – April 2024
Introduction meeting to discuss assignment
Teachers depicting different dimensions
Learning through play
Learning through play lesson demonstration
VBE stories of change
Submission of final edits and raw footage
Travel to Lamu for 7 days will be required and should be included in the financial proposal.
Contract duration
The partnership will be valid from 25th February, 2024- 30th April ,2024
Qualifications Required
The consultant or organisation is required to demonstrate evidence and experience of:
Videographer/Video team/Photographer based in Mombasa County with demonstrated national expertise in film and video creation and photography and photo exhibitions, with at least 5 years of relevant working experience in professional photography in similar field;
Experience in editing videos and photos for humanitarian settings;
Photographer with bilingual skills (English/Kiswahili) is preferred;
Work with Media Agencies, International Organizations, NGOs an asset
Availability and willingness to travel to different villages in selected locations where the project sites are.
Procedures and Logistics
The AKF team will regularly monitor the progress of the consultant’s work through check in calls.
Consultant will work from her/his private space
Consultant will use her/his computer and other equipment if necessary
Consultant will submit final report in an electronic form.
Conditions
The nature of the contract will be temporary
The consultant is expected to conduct all work independently, in accordance with professional standards.
The consultant is expected to proactively engage with the AKF visibility and branding guidelines.
Payment Terms
Payment is linked to receipt and satisfactory acceptance of deliverables;
Payment will be done in instalments with 40% paid upon signing of the contract; and the remaining upon agreement with consultant based on deliverables. Payment will be based upon completion of the deliverable(s) and subject to approval County Coordinator- TUKU, communication officer and AKF Programme Manager.
