Duties

The Political-Economic Assistant is responsible for management of a portfolio of political and/or economic issues, with a focus dependent on the needs of the section and interests/background of the incumbent. This includes research; writing cables and/or reports; and developing a full range of contacts in host government ministries, department and agencies, as well as in NGOs, international organizations and businesses.

Incumbent tracks Government of Malawi priorities, as well as participation in and progress toward USG priorities. The incumbent briefs Political-Economic section and Front Office personnel on relevant political and/or developments within his/her portfolio, and advices on USG engagement strategies.

The incumbent will also serve as the Small Grants Coordinator, co-managing the Embassy’s Small Grants Office and Small Grants funds, overseeing the use of approximately $400,000 of USG Small Grants Funds.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Experience:

  • At least two years of progressively responsible professional experience in positions that demonstrate use of good communication skills and focus on teamwork is required.

    Job Knowledge:

  • Good knowledge of USG regulations and policies, Federal Assistance Directives, Office of Management and Budget, and post-specific guidance.

    Education Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in international relations, political science, economics, business administration, or public relations, is required.

    Language:

  • English: Level 4 – Fluent; speaking/reading/writing, may include the ability to translate

    Skills and Abilities

  • The ability to clearly synthesize information and articulate (written and oral) implication for USG priorities.
