Job Brief
The maintenance engineer is responsible for the continuous running of equipment and machinery. Through experience, he observes machine conditions and oversees routine maintenance and organizes repairs. S/he plays a vital role in the efficiency, development and progress of manufacturing and processing industries through planning orders and being thorough in procuring required items.
S/he works with other department professionals to improve production facilities, reduce the incidence of costly, breakdowns, and high downtime and develop strategies to improve the overall reliability and safety of plant, personnel and production processes.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Machinery
Designing maintenance strategies, procedures and methods.
Carrying out routine scheduled maintenance work and responding to equipment faults.
Diagnosing breakdown problems.
Fitting new parts and making sure equipment is working correctly.
Carrying out quality/maintenance inspections on jobs.
Liaising with client departments, customers and other engineering and production colleagues.
Arranging specialist procurement of fixtures, fittings or components.
Controlling maintenance tools, stores and equipment.
Monitoring and controlling maintenance costs.
Dealing with emergencies, unplanned problems and repairs.
Improving health and safety policies and procedures.
Working with specialist equipment, such as programmable logic controllers (plc), which control machinery on factory assembly lines.
Writing maintenance strategies to help with installation and commissioning guidelines.
Ensuring there is continuous cover of the machinery and equipment in case of breakdowns.
Management and Planning
Supervises training of personnel to ensure all crafts (electrical, hydraulic and mechanical) have the required level of expertise. Ensures efficiency and high standards are maintained.
Drawing up, implementing and supervising daily maintenance for all equipment.
Job allocation for the maintenance persons.
Consults with and provides information and guidance to maintenance personnel.
Work with the team to plan spare part procurement.
Quality and Safety Management
Communicates and directs the application of prescribed safety and environmental regulations.
Ensure departmental personnel are properly trained and provided with appropriate maintenance skills as required.
Carry out, with the involvement of floor personnel, weekly/monthly workplace quality maintenance safety-related inspections.
Investigate all accidents or safety incidents within the Plant, ensuring proper “root cause analysis” to provide remedial action to prevent reoccurrence, this can be done in liaison with the engineering manager.
Fully participate in the Client’s Way Operating System.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education, Skills and Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related field required, Master’s degree in the related field is an added advantage.
Registration with a professional association is an added advantage.
Eight to ten years of experience in plant maintenance.
