Main Purpose of Job:

The British Office Sudan (BOS) are looking to recruit a capable, motivated, and experienced individual to lead the design and coordinate implementation of our Office’s communications strategy. This is a fantastic opportunity, at a critical time for Sudan, to ensure BOS communications are professional, impactful and engaging.

The Communications Manager will play a pivotal role within the BOS team. They will need to collaborate closely with the most senior staff in BOS, including the Ambassador, and provide regular challenge. They are the initial point of contact with Sudanese and international journalists and media organisations, and lead on designing strategic campaigns.

It is a demanding and challenging role that requires significant media experience and an ability to cultivate extensive contacts in this domain. Strong skills in social media are essential, as well as a detailed understanding of how strategic communications can help deliver BOS objectives in Sudan. The successful candidate will be collaborative, innovative and self-assured.

Roles and Responsibilities:

As Communications Manager, you will be responsible for managing the BOS public profile and engaging with local, regional and international media. This will include working with the Head of Press to have oversight of external communications, public diplomacy campaigns, and monitoring perceptions of the UK (and BOS) in Sudan.

As the Communications Manager, you will advise the wider office (including the Ambassador) on the local media environment, running media campaigns, placing content and liaising with local and regional media outlets.

You will have a media, public relations or communications background and bring creativity, adding energy and innovation to our communication channels. You will also be responsible for some translation duties in the absence of a Translator.

Key Responsibilities Include:

Design and implement our BOS Communications Strategy

  • Collaborate closely with BOS policy and programme leads, as well as FCDO HQ, to ensure we are using public diplomacy strategically to achieve our objectives.
  • Advise senior leadership on prioritising campaigns to ensure BOS is using its public platform as efficiently as possible.

    Design and implement Communications Campaigns

  • Work with policy and programme leads to identify and develop innovative and ambitious communications campaigns, targeting specific audiences and using the most effective channels in the context of the Sudanese media landscape.
  • Work with policy and programme leads to evaluate the success of campaigns and ensure lessons learned are incorporated into future campaigns.

    Day to day running of our social media and online presence

  • Lead on the planning, drafting and publishing of engaging and impactful content on our social media channels.
  • Manage the BOS online presence, understanding the UK’s policies and how these translate to the Sudanese context, analysing the nature of engagement to our content and looking for ways to learn and improve in how we make our content even better. Produce press/media summaries to keep BOS colleagues up to date on the media landscape and inform policy making.
  • Keep up to date on the latest trends in the media and social media landscape for Sudan, producing a daily written summary of the Sudanese media for BOS and UK colleagues, writing reports on trends and developments in the Sudanese media landscape, and looking for opportunities to create new communications products for BOS.

    Manage the BOS relationship with the Press

  • Develop an extensive network in Sudanese media, building strong relationships with TV, newspaper and radio journalists as well as social media influencers.
  • Advise on how the Ambassador and other BOS leads interact with the media and arrange interviews / op-eds / press conferences etc.

    Essential qualifications, skills and experience

  • Minimum two years of work experience in a relevant field (media, journalism, public relations, and communications, preferably in a bilateral or multilateral agency).
  • Candidates should be highly organised, have a track record as a team player and should be able to work in a diverse, high-performing environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and able to build productive working relations with internal and external contacts.
  • Competent in managing social media channels, with a strong understanding of how they work.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office packages.

    Translating complex documents from English to Arabic and vice versa.
  • Relevant university degree.

    Language Requirements:

  • Language: English, Arabic

    Desirable qualifications, skills and experience

  • Experience in strategic communication planning, ideally based on the OASIS model.
  • Internet-based social media diagnostics and video/photo editing skills.
  • Knowledge of Sudan’s government and political system, culture, media environment and society.
