Context

The MSF Operational Centre Brussels (OCB) Medical Department provides strategic direction and technical leadership, committing to keeping up-to date on innovations in health care.

It shares the responsibility of the operational choices and the responsiveness and is involved in the support of our project teams jointly developing context-adapted medical-operational strategies and defining levels of care. The department is composed of multiple specialists based across a network of units across the world and works in close collaboration with operations, other OCB departments and MSF movement.

MSF OCB has increasing numbers of hospitals with increased number of beds, volume of activities, complexity of care and technicality; OCB wants to invest in ensuring adequate, sustained, and good quality nursing care.

As Nursing Care Mobile Implementation Officer (MIO), in Neonatology / Pediatrics or Operating Theatre, you will provide direct technical support to nurses at the projects, supported by and collaboration with the Nursing Care referent.

Responsibilities

As Nursing Care MIO specialized in Neonatology / Pediatrics or Operating Theatre, you provide technical support to nurses and nursing leadership at the project level. All areas of focus will be in collaboration with project teams to empower them to sustain and continually improve safe, effective, and person-centred care.

Your Main Responsibilities are to:

  • Appraise current nursing care practices and prepare comprehensive, contextualized, and prioritized improvement plans in collaboration with project nursing teams and project supervisors.
  • Promote, and train on, tools for patient safety and quality improvement and instill a culture of evidence-based quality improvement and a learning culture in relation to patient safety.
  • Ensure nurses have access to standard nursing care resources and support the implementation of protocols, guidelines, medical devices, and changes in practice accompanied by monitoring for deployment and impact.
  • Optimize the planning and organization of nursing-related activities, including the coordination of care activities, managing human resources, and maintaining effective interactions between different departments.
  • Mentor and coach nurses, Head Nurses and Nursing Directors / Nursing Activities Managers provide targeted training and support an education calendar for the department.
  • Depending on its specialization in Neonatology / Pediatrics or Operating Theatre, the Nursing care MIO will focus on holistic neonatal and pediatric care with attention on medication safety, or on patient safety and flow in the operating theatre, post- anesthesia care unit, and recovery room with optimal interdepartmental interaction.

    Requirements

    Education and Experience

  • Registered nurse or BSc in nursing (Bachelor of Science in nursing**) required**.
  • Specialization in Neonatology / Pediatrics or Operating Theatre is mandatory.
  • Clinical experience in Neonatal care / Pediatrics within secondary care or OT/perioperative nursing care within the last 2 years is mandatory.
  • 3 years-experience with MSF or a comparable organization in low-middle income countries and/or humanitarian contexts is mandatory.
  • Experience in Intensive care or Emergency Room care is an asset.

  • Proven training, coaching and mentoring skills.
  • Capacity to analyze and synthesize multiple inputs.
  • Rigorous, organised, able to prioritise and work within agreed timeline.
  • Adaptation to changing circumstances and contexts.
  • Strong cross-cultural awareness and adaptability.

    Languages

  • Very good spoken and written communication skills in French and English are mandatory.
  • Fluency in Portuguese, Spanish and Arabic is an asset.

    Other

  • Willingness to travel overseas under difficult conditions in some insecure and remote locations.

    Conditions

  • Expected starting date: As soon as possible.
  • Location*: Brussels (Belgium), Nairobi (Kenya) or Abidjan (Ivory Coast). Other locations where there is an MSF entity may be discussed.
  • Mobility up to 70% in project locations.
  • Contract type: Fixed term contract – Full time.
  • Contract duration: 1 year.
  • Salary according to MSF-OCB Field grid.
  • Medical Insurance 100% covered as per international package – 45 paid leaves
  • The contractual conditions will be established based on the station, on administrative / legal constraints and in respect of MSF function grids and salary policies.
