Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the Director-General of UNON is the representative of the Secretary-General in Kenya. UNON supports programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) and the Resident Coordination System (RCS) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, security, conference and information services (www.unon.org).
This post is located in the Publishing Services Section, Division of Conference Services, at the Nairobi duty station. Within limits of delegated authority and reporting to the Deputy Chief of Section, the Graphic Arts Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:
Responsibilities
Assists in the layout and preparation of information materials, including production of electronically published products, such as motion graphics videos; in consultation with authors and other relevant staff, establishes illustrative requirements to meet communications objectives; prepares submission schedules for various communications products (e.g., periodicals, books, posters, newsletters, pamphlets, and other material).
In consultation with relevant staff/units, assists in the planning the design, production, and scheduling of graphic material; assists in providing technical support for the design, layout, and make-up of individual pages of various communications products, using relevant desktop publishing tools.
Gathers information for articles or features; takes photographs and creates graphics and motion graphic videos, manipulates this material prior to preparation of final proofs.
Determines specifications for size, paper, typesetting, layout, illustrations, colors, etc.
Assists in the development and maintenance of a storage and retrieval system for artwork and print components (e.g., mockups, galleys, camera-ready mechanicals, color key and separations, printer’s films, stripped flats and plates, etc.).
Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making.
Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures.
Performing other related duties as required.

Professionalism: Knowledge of standard industry production and printing processes, including desktop publishing, design, and layout. Knowledge of internal UN printing practices and operations. Knowledge of photography, videography, page layout and photograph sizing. Ability to produce high-quality graphic and video material. The ability to perform analysis, modeling and interpretation of data in support of decision-making. Shows pride in work and in achievements.

Education
High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Supplemental training in graphic design industry or related graphics arts study from a recognized national institution is desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible work experience in graphic design publishing or related areas is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced by two years for candidates who possess a first level University degree.
Experience in publications production, including desktop publishing, digital design and layout is desirable.
One (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
