Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the immediate Office of the Director within United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS). The Staff Welfare Assistant will be based in Mogadishu and reports to the Senior Administrative Officer through the Staff Welfare Officer.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Welfare Assistant at this level will be responsible for the following duties:

• Assist in assessing, identifying and monitoring the sources of stress and stress levels of UN personnel in Somalia, and serve as focal point for welfare activities in the mission.

• Assist in developing programmes designed to improve the quality of life of staff

members within the mission area.

• Assist in monitoring the factors that could lead to unhealthy lifestyle and developing programmes to reduce stress levels among staff.

• Organize welfare events to improve opportunities for safe recreational activities for mission personnel.

• Create and develop a generic menu of welfare and recreation programs for regional offices including training, exercise classes, cultural awareness and social events, etc.

• Travel periodically to regional offices in Somalia where welfare activities are required.

• Increase staff awareness and information about social and recreational opportunities available to them in the mission area by developing informational resources in all areas in Somalia where UNSOS/UNSOM staff are deployed.

• Develop a welfare library and supervise the arrangement of appropriate reading and multimedia materials.

• Liaise with UN Staff Welfare and Recreation Committee and other UN agencies on virtual social, cultural and global events or activities.

• Collect and submit statistics on activities, participation in events, and contacts with staff members, etc.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

    Work Experience

  • At least eight years of experience in planning recreational and welfare events is required.
  • Experience in organizing conferences, corporate events or management of leisure facilities is desirable.
  • Experience in providing services in staff welfare support in a field operation of the United Nations Common System or a comparable international organization is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English is required.
