This position is in the Publications & Conference Management Section (PCMS) within the Publications Conference and Knowledge Management Division (PCKMD) in the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Addis Ababa Ethiopia. The Senior printing press operator will work under the general supervision of the Head of the Production Services (PS).

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Head of the Production services, the senior digital press operator (supervisor of the Printshop) will be responsible for the following duties:

• Takes responsibility for and oversees the work of the Printshop with respect to the timely preparation of parliamentary and related documentation, supplements, and publications.

• Ensures Digital Presses are operated in accordance with the Digital Press Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Takes responsibility for identifying hazardous tasks/operations in accordance with the guidelines set out in the SOPs.

• Handle all issues related to ISO: 14001-2015, keep records and ensure full compliance with the ISO policies.

• Interfaces with Desktop Publishing team to ensure a complete understanding of the job.

• Assigns work according to a schedule of priorities to ensure timely issue of products and an equitable distribution of work.

• Assures the availability of all relevant resources to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the digital press operations.

• Performs administrative work, including / maintenance schedule of all equipment.

• Supervises the staff by identifying and resolving issues, monitoring staff performance, participating in and overseeing staff training. Completes performance evaluations (e-performance) for supervised staff.

• Confers and collaborates with other units to maximize resources; this includes identifying statistical charts, diagrams, and organigrams for utilization by other Units.

• Reviews and corrects files, loads fonts, inspects graphics, and finalizes content for production. Advises clients on the preparation of files, as necessary.

• Undertakes layout/imposition of files to plate setter, sets line screens, resolution, and other press-specific settings.

• Participates, as a member of the team, in performing all digital printing equipment operator functions as noted in the job specifications.

• Maintains knowledge and safety requirements of job and equipment, and ensures the safe, effective, and efficient operation of equipment to the highest industry standards and as noted in

the job specifications.

• Performs all troubleshooting procedures on the Digital Presses in accordance with manufacturer/vendor’s specifications.

• Diagnoses, resolves, and documents technical problems (e.g., problems relating to text, graphics and images, software, and system errors, etc.).

• Co-ordinates with vendors for repair of Digital Presses, as needed.

• Ensures all supervised staff are trained with respect to the operation of equipment and work-flow procedures.

• Makes recommendations regarding the acquisition of new equipment, and relevant training for staff.

• Rotates in shifts, as well as weekend on-call duties, as needed.

• Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making.

• Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures.

• Performs other related work as required.

    Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent. A bachelor’s degree in publishing, digital printing, management/business administration or related fields is desirable.

    Work Experience

  • A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in pre-press or digital printing operations is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to eight (8) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher.
  • Knowledge of documents management workflow and advanced repair and maintenance are desirable.
  • One (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
