Org. Setting and Reporting

These positions are located in the Safety and Security Section of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in Juba, which are classified in the “E” category and as non-family duty stations. The incumbents will report directly to the Field Security Coordination Officer/Coordinator of Security Unit.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority and under the direct supervision of the Area Security Adviser or the Field Security Coordination Officer (FSCO), the Security Officer may carry out the following duties:

• Drafts and updates security contingency plans for a security unit¿.

• Monitors prevailing local security conditions and trends and advises UN personnel, project personnel and eligible dependents on security issues.

• Assists Senior Officers in the development of specific security risk assessments for individual UN programmes and activities in countries and regions, or in preparation of threat and security risk assessments.

• Monitors air, land and sea emergency evacuation capability; conducts evacuation exercises

• Assists in the assessment of accessible areas and assists in the coordination of a 24-hour Emergency Response System as required.

• Conducts security risk assessments for the area of operations as required.

• Maintains continuing lines of communication with security focal points and other UN or non-UN stake holders.

• Contributes to the delivery of security training to security and non-security personnel.

• Provides advice, guidance and support on security related matters affecting UN personnel in mission or field offices, as required.

• Conducts routine physical security assessments of UN facilities.

• Provides advice to UN personnel and eligible dependents on security matters, as assigned.

• Conducts Investigations of security-related incidents involving UN personnel, project personnel or eligible dependents.

• Analyses security information identifies trends of threats and security incidents affecting United Nations System personnel, assets, and operations in specific countries.

• Conducts trend analysis, gathers comprehensive information on all factors of insecurity,

• Performs other duties as required

    Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

    Work Experience

  • A minimum of six (6) years’ experience in the military, police, or international security organization is required.
  • At least one (1) year experience at international level and in a conflict or post conflict environment is required.
  • At least two (2) years’ experience in security operations and /or security information analyses or similar within a military, police or security organization is desirable.

    Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the positions advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required;
