Free the Slaves West Africa Regional Director Jobs in Ghana
Position Overview
The West Africa Regional Director leads FTS efforts on engaging key actors in the West Africa region working to eradicate forced labor, modern slavery, human trafficking and child labor. The West Africa Regional Director will manage work with key institutions and stakeholders in the region including the government and its specific agencies, regional institutions, United Nations agencies, financial institutions, Civil Society Organizations, coalitions and networks, foundations and other entities working or established in the region and outside the region depending on the opportunity.
The West Africa Regional Director leads the design and implementation of the FTS strategy in West Africa and works closely with key allies, the communications team, the development and fundraising team, the programs teams, the Executive Director.
The West Africa Regional Director represents FTS at meetings and other advocacy initiatives. The West Africa Regional Director reports to the Executive Director and supervises staff in Ghana, Senegal and Mauritania and elsewhere as needed.
Principal Responsibilities
Leadership:
Lead the execution of the regional strategy and work with key partners and allies to implement it in accordance with the FTS strategic plan.
Ensure effective and strategic implementation of FTS regional programs and ensure the learning are shared with partners and allies, and internally.
Lead the regional fundraising initiatives and work with the regional team and headquarters to ensure timely submission of proposals and related research, and secure needed resources to advance FTS objectives in the region.
Ensure the regional offices are functioning in line with national laws and FTS policies including human resources, financial procedures, and procurements.
Demonstrate leadership in shaping and leading the organization’s regional advocacy agenda, and ensure buy-in from allies, partners, and stakeholders.
Act as the organizational point of contact in the region or lead the organization in education campaigns with a focus on policy and advocacy as determined by the Executive Director.
Initiate new programs, initiatives and projects in West Africa in line with FTS regional strategy
Initiate strategic partnerships and alliances in the region and provide effective support to existing partners
Diversify the partnership portfolio by creating new partnerships with anti-modern slavery and non-anti-modern slavery partners.
Build the capacity of key actors including government, survivors, CSOs and others
Oversee FTS properties include vehicles, motorbikes, equipment and materials.
As a member of the Senior Management Team (SMT) provide a thought leadership to the organization and decide on important organizational matters.
Management:
Manage FTS work in West Africa, currently Ghana, Mauritania and Senegal including ensuring the work is implemented as desired
Manage the regional budget in accordance with the grant agreement guidelines including timely reporting, and ensure due diligence.
Manage the West Africa team in accordance with FTS policies and national policies
Manage grants and ensure they are implemented in accordance with the requirements set forth in the agreements.
Supervise and orient designated staff as needed.
Ensure timely reporting on grant agreement guidelines and other engagements, and key internal reporting framework.
Manage FTS relationship with the ICI (International Cocoa Initiative) and other key coalitions that FTS is part of.
Engagement and Advocacy:
Support the pathfinder country governments (currently, Mauritania and Ghana) implement their roadmaps and provide guidance in line with the Alliance 8.7 Pathfinder Country Accountability Framework.
Raise awareness as part of the FTS national strategy to increase the visibility of modern slavery issues by working with partners, allies, and key stakeholders to achieve specific goals and objectives.
Engage relevant stakeholders including country-based embassies, national governments and its agencies, United Nations agencies, CSOs and Coalitions, survivor networks, regional and global institutions based in West Africa, etc.
Represent Free the Slaves at relevant meetings and conferences, and serve in leadership positions at those meetings and conferences. This includes identifying interested audiences, presenting information about FTS, and increasing awareness of the objectives of Free the Slaves and the work of the organization.
Create partnerships and alliances with key actors in development, finance, education, communication and policy.
Attend organizational meetings, workshops, and other engagements as required.
Mobilize key allies and partners to achieve tangible outcomes on achieving Sustainable Development Goal’s target 8.7.
Design and implement FTS engagement and outreach strategy in the region through the use of credible information to determine engagement and outreach priorities for Free the Slaves.
In consultation with the Head of Communications, draft and disseminate digital advocacy and awareness messaging through social media and online outlets.

Person’s qualifications
A least a Master’s degree in Law, international affairs, management, economics, or related field
7+ years of proven experience working with and leading on regional programs or/and projects.
7+ years of proven experience working in the NGOs, UN agencies, Regional Institutions, multi-lateral sectors
7+ years of proven experience managing a team of diverse 10+ staff
Proven responsibility as leading manager in a nonprofit or agency
Ability to lead competing programs and manage effective management of resources
Demonstrated experience and knowledge of the NGO culture, the West Africa field knowledge
Demonstrated experience and skills in policy and/or advocacy at national, regional, and global levels.
Demonstrate experience, knowledge and skills in diplomacy or ability to work with different diverse stakeholders including government officials, survivors of modern slavery, CSOs, academics, funders, media, etc.
Demonstrated experience and skills in management (financial, administrative, human and logistical)
The ability to lead and engage in global coalitions and networks, government affairs, and initiatives aimed at creating a sense of need for impact around modern slavery conditions and to advocate for systemic and social change.
Superb written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
Demonstrated experience and skills in events and conference organization including logistics preparedness, event planning, etc.
Experience in fundraising including proposal writing, donor relationships, etc.
Demonstrated experience in financial management and reporting.
Ability or experience working in a diverse environment
Strong organizational skills.
Keen and detail-oriented
Minimum 3-year experience in engaging with government and/or other bilateral institutions
Demonstrated experience in managing and working with a wide range of national partners, allies, and stakeholders
A current understanding of human rights and the movement against human trafficking and modern-day slavery in the DRC.
Demonstrated experience in new technologies including social media.
Ability to juggle multiple tasks, work under tight deadlines, and deliver on projects and within budgets.
Experience leading and working with staff in an innovative environment.
Ability to communicate clearly and consistently with a variety of technical and non-technical audiences including staff, stakeholders, donors, and board members both orally and in writing.
High level of French both in writing and speaking is key
Additional Qualifications
Knowledge of national and regional affairs related to anti-modern slavery
High-level English and French language is required; at least one other regional language such as Arabic
Familiarity with new technologies as a tool for training and mobilization is an asset.
A strong field experience is an advantage.
Knowledge of the United Nations, European Union, African Union, ECOWAS systems is a great advantage.
