This position is located in the Travel, Transport and Visa Services Unit (TTVSU) of the Publications, Conference and Knowledge Management Division (PCKMD) of the Economic Commission for Africa at its headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Responsibilities
Under the general guidance of the Chief of the Travel, Transport and Visa Services Unit (TTVSU), Publications and Conference Management Section, and the direct supervision of the supervisor of the Transport Unit, the driver shall perform the following duties:
Drives vehicles safely for the transport of authorized personnel, meeting participants and distinguished guests of the Commission before and during the conferences and for the transport of general cargo goods.
Provides ground transportation services, among others, to staff for official business of the organization, receiving delegates, guests, and conference participants from airport to their respective hotels and shuttle from their hotel to ECA and back and eventually see them off on their return and ensure the vehicle is parked at ECA compound at the end of the days’ work for secure parking.
Coordinates with ECA Security on security precautions for any journey. Liaising with the Protocol Unit to provide appropriate VIP reception at the airport.
Conducts daily checks on the ECA official vehicles to ensure the mechanical soundness and overall anilines of the assigned vehicle(s) prior to operating, checking petrol, oil, and water levels; electrical system; keys, tire pressure and condition.
Reports vehicle problems to the sub-unit supervisor and maintains accurate records of all trips. Delivers vehicles to garages for periodic maintenance, servicing, and other required repair work. Arranges and oversees annual roadworthiness tests for the ECA and other official vehicles, as assigned.
Provides pouch courier services such as delivery of official documents to embassies, government offices and other locations as well as delivery of equipment for maintenance and repair as assigned.
Keep abreast with updated information on garages/workshops, insurance companies and other service providers. In addition, to have updated information about road safety, road traffic and weather conditions, roadblocks, demonstrations, and other current information, using handheld radios (walkie talkies) and mobile phones, which would be required by the supervisor for planning purposes.
Alert the supervisor to impending changes in transportation rules and regulations by virtue of contacts maintained with the authorities of the transportation office.
Provides ground transportation to conference delegates on tours of Addis Ababa and on excursions outside the city when approved by the authorizing office.
Briefs and provides information to conference delegates, meeting participants and other guests on requests such as tourist attractions and other places of interest and general information about the country and/or the organization.
Executes transport and logistics activities during ECA’s major conferences/meetings, and other events. He/she is expected to communicate and deals effectively and tactfully with higher officials, meeting participants and other guests and portray good image of the organization.
Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making.
• Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent. Must have valid third (3rd) grade driver’s license.
Job – Specific Qualification
Driving training with Valid third (3rd) grade driver’s license is required.
Work Experience
At least three years of progressively responsible experience as a driver with a safe driving record is required.
Experience in driving a variety of makes and models of vehicles, including vans and other kinds of motorized vehicles is required.
Experience in computer skills or related area is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
