United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) is currently seeking applications from eligible applicants for the post of Associate Director, Health Emergencies Preparedness and Response in  New York, United States.

Key Jobs Responsibilities

The Associate Director, Health Emergencies Preparedness and Response will perform the following functions:

  • Strategy development and guidance
    • Direct the overall strategy for UNICEF to engage in HEPR, including strengthening preparedness actions including to support UNICEF’s contribution to the implementation and evaluation of IHR core country capacities and reinforce linkages with system strengthening.
  • Representation, advocacy and partnership
    • Lead UNICEF’s engagement in WHO Emergencies Programme, GOARN, IHR, and other PHE interagency coordination mechanisms such as the Global Health Security Agenda.
  • Programme coordination and collaboration
    • Responsible for coordinating HEPR programme at Headquarters, Regional and Country offices in developing plans and activities to strengthen UNICEF’s capacity to deliver effective HEPR programmes.
  • Knowledge management and capacity building
    • Lead the consolidation and dissemination of practical form lessons learned from UNICEF and partner’s response to outbreaks, data on morbidity and mortality from epidemic/pandemic prone diseases with a focus on children, outbreak risk assessments and developments from partners and academia such as research articles, guidelines, tools and training material.
  • Coordination support for PHE
    • Lead a cross sectoral and interdivisional team across UNICEF to strengthen the coherence of UNICEF’s contribution to emergency preparedness, response, recovery and longer term development.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have:

  • Advanced University Degree in Public Health, Medicine, or another clinical area, is required.
  • Minimum 13 year’s professional experience in international health emergencies, including programme management and coordination with at least 10 year’s served in managing outbreaks at the national and international levels, particularly in leading outbreak response teams.
  • Broad multi-sectoral knowledge and field experience in UNICEF programmes or other UN agencies and organizations in outbreaks in a development or emergency environment, is an asset.
  • Oral and written fluency in English is required and French is desirable.
  • Knowledge of a third UN official language is an asset.
