Americans of Reddit: Do you both tumble dry and use fabric softener? If so, why are you using both?

I just learned that drying clothes on lines outside is frowned upon in parts of the US of A, but as far as I know, fabric softener is used extensively in the US of A. So I was wondering about the reason.
