Org. Setting and Reporting

  • The position supports the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General (PESG) for Sudan. The Personal Envoy leads good offices and political engagement with Sudanese, regional and international stakeholders to enhance efforts to end the Sudan conflict and relaunch a credible political process, aiming for greater coherence, coordination and integration of the various mediation initiatives. The Senior Gender Affairs Officer will report to the Principal Political Affairs Officer/Head of Office. The position is based in Addis Ababa.

    Responsibilities

    Within the limits of delegated authority, the Senior Gender Affairs Officer will be responsible for performing the following duties:

  • Provides advice to the PESG and senior management on women, peace and security issues and mainstreaming a gender perspective into the tasks of the office.

  • Assists leadership in the office’s engagement with relevant international, regional and national actors on the participation and inclusion of women in all phases of the peace and political processes in Sudan.

  • Ensures liaison and coordination with partners, internal and external, as related to gender equality and women, peace and security issues.

  • Provides senior management with analysis and guidance on ensuring effective implementation of women, peace and security mandates and Departmental policies on gender equality.

  • Assists senior management to meet their accountability goals on gender equality in line with the Security Council mandates on women, peace and security.

  • Supervises the development of an action plan to translate existing mandates and policies on the promotion of gender equality in all activities of the office.

  • Develops and oversees mechanisms for monitoring, evaluating and reporting on gender mainstreaming in office activities.

  • Assists the work on Conflict Related Sexual Violence/Sexual and Gender Based Violence (CRSV/SGBV) in accordance with comprehensive strategies, in coordination and collaboration with any women protection capacity working on Sudan within the UN system.

  • Regularly reports to senior management and HQ on gender activities and women, peace and security issues.

  • Represents the office on activities related to women, peace and security issues where needed.

  • Performs other related work as required.

    Education

  • Advanced university degree, (Master’s degree or equivalent) preferably in international relations, human rights law, social science or related humanities field.

  • A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree
